Preparation of the game-fishing initiative in Nonouti for the generation of income to enhance food security in the context of climate change.

TAK officials had visited the island of Nonouti to prepare the cultural package before the arrival of the first angler group from 2nd – 9th of September, 2019.

The objective of the activity is to target the international anglers for fishing game promotion in order for both the island’s council and the islanders to generate income for sustainable livelihood against the impacts of climate change.

The Island Council was first consulted on the purpose of the visit and the local tour guide and the communities were engaged in the beautification of the cultural sites.

6 cultural sites were maintained during this visit which include; Te Aake Maneaba, Marenaubon, the shrine of Nei Tewenei, the headquarters of the Roman Catholic and the monuments of the first arrived Catholic missionaries in Kiribati which are all stationed at Umwantewenei and Taribo tribe in the village of Taboiaki and Ana Ngea te Unimwaane, the offering shrine located at Tekib’aka tribe in Temotu village, the last village in the Southern Nonouti but the first village to be visited for offering and receiving the blessing of the Island.

During the preparation the signage was made for every shrine. This will enable the anglers to see easily the shrines. The fencing was constructed and cleaning around the sites.

TAK also had an opportunity to promote to the community the marketing of cultural sites in a small- scale business approach so they can generate income from it and sustain their livelihood against the impacts of climate change.

“This is a great idea; we can make garlands for the anglers and sell it to them together with the fresh coconut juice (moimoto)” said Angineti Itinata from the Catholic Church women group known as “Te Riki-n-Imakurata” in Taboiaki.

TAK confirmed that the work on the cultural site will be continued every year where the communities from Nonouti will be also engaged effectively for the sustainability of this program and for them to keep generating income from it.

The trip is supported by the LDCF-I Project known as the Least Developed Countries Fund which is funded by the GEF through the UNDP and managed by the Environment and Conservation Division under the MELAD.
