On Friday, the 15th of November 2019, 2 Officers from Coastal Fisheries Division left for Abemama island to revisit former communities who had been working on their Community Based Fisheries Management Plans (CBFMPs) and to assess the status of the implementation of the other already completed CBFMPs.
In this trip 5 villages visited by the team such as Tabiang, Reina, Baretoa, Tebwanga Maiaki and Abatiku. Villages that need the finalisation of the their CBFMPs are Tabiang, Baretoa and Tebwanga Maiaki while Reina and Abatiku already had their plan in place hence the team is to assess the status of the implementation. The team also had the opportunity to seek information regarding the training that will enhance their capacity on tourism development.
This visit gave these villages encouragement in reviewing their management plans thoroughly thus empowered them to start enforcing it within their villages for example Reina.
Mr Avia Teruruai the councillor from Abatiku thanked the LDCF-I project for funding this initiative as it will give them the ownership to look after their marine resources for the generation to come. that will support food securing as from the protection of sea food-based resources they will continue to have their daily subsistence. They were ready to do the implementation and compliance of the management plans once it was confirmed by the whole village.
All the villages visited were all glad to support this program as their food security will be enhanced during times of bad weather as a result of climate change. “We need to protect our MPA so we can have more ark shells and fish species in our lagoon “ Mr Erimite Eria A chairperson from Baretoa.
According to the report, about 116 participants attended the consultations which 62% are women and 38% are men.
The trip is supported by LDCF-I project and funded by the GEF through the UNDP and managed by the Environment and Conservation Division under the MELAD.
