A weekend retreat to ensure a smooth implementation in 2020 for LDCF-I project activities

Under the LDCF-I project, 29 staff members from different ministries together with the project management unit spent the weekend retreat at Abaokoro, North Tarawa from the 13th-15th of December 2019.

The purpose of the retreat is to review and finalise the costed work plan for 2020. The members of the retreat comprised of 9 ministries, the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resource Development, Agriculture and livestock division, Local Government Division, Culture and Museum Division, Environment and Conservation Division, Ministry of Commerce and Industrial Cooperatives, Tourism Authority of Kiribati, Kiribati Local Government Association and Kiribati Meteorological Service.

This retreat will significantly reveal and discuss the cost work planned by these ministries regarding the activities that will support the livelihood of the locals in the 3 pilot islands. As the purpose of these activities is to enhance the capacities of the locals to adapt to climate change impacts and to ensure food security.

Maiana, Abemama and Nonouti are the 3 pilot islands in which these activities will focus on and this project (LDCF-I) will continue to implement these plan activities to these islands until the end of this project in 2020. However, there is a possibility that other project funds or climate-resilient projects will take place in the other remaining islands of Kiribati.

During the retreat a lot of ideas and plans towards the end of LDCF project in 2020 were affirmed by these 9 ministries or stakeholders under this project.

The retreat was supported by LDCF-I (Least Developed Countries Fund) Project, funded by the GEF (Global Environment Facility) Program under the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) and implemented under the Environment and Conservation Division with the support of the United Nations Development Programme.
