Enforcement and Inspection
Section 49 of the Environment Act 1999 (2007 amendments) empowers environment officers as Environment Inspectors to implement and enforce the Environment Act in Kiribati especially on South Tarawa.
Enforcement and Inspection is comprised of Environment Inspectors performing their roles and responsibilities for the purpose of administering the Environment Act 1999, including the following activities;
- Carry out weekly patrol on illegal activities such as illegal sand and gravel mining, littering, illegal dumping of wastes in the lagoon, etc,
- Review and inspect proposed and ongoing development projects,
- Member of shipping boarding party to inspect and clear incoming foreign vessels,
- Issue compliance, infringement and clean up notices to any person carrying out illegal activities,
- Investigate and arrest any person (with assistance of police force) who is committing or who has committed an offense against the Environment Act 1999,
